John Wean - JANUARY

John Wean (pronounced John Wayne) are four Scottish lads who write songs about love, life and their biggest interest - girls. Gary Crowley, BBC London, has described them as "four gun-slingers from Glasgow" and "the best thing to come out of Uddingston since the Tunnock's tea cake".

Jim Gellatly, Clyde 1, has also heralded John Wean as “the sound of the skins/inbetweeners generation” because they write songs about their experiences and convey what happens in every city and town in Britain. Whether it be the lighter moments of love and laughter or the darker experiences involving drink, drugs and underage pregnancy, they write about the lives of the people they sing to.  And that’s why people relate to them.

The band got noticed at an early stage by the booker at King Tut's.  He realised quickly that whenever John Wean showed up, they always brought a large and lively crowd. In December he asked them to support Tom Hingley and they brought in a crowd of 150 people. Knowing that the band could draw a large support, they where invited back in April where they played with the brilliant Young Rebel Set. This time they brought a crowd of more than 250 to help sell out the 300 capacity venues.

When it came to the launch of their first single, they decided that they would be better off hiring the Classic Grand and promoting it themselves. In September they packed out that venue and played to 500 of their own fans. Last winter the band played a handful of gigs around Britain in their first headline shows outside of Glasgow.

In the five months since their website went live it has received more than 25,000 hits and not only from the UK, as the band have fans all over Europe and from as far away as the Americas and Asia.

The Mirror Trap

John Wean are not a niche band but are inherently mainstream, creating music, which appeals to the mass market. They have made a really great album with good songs that the public can relate to but, refreshingly, there is no record company hype – people are starting to recognise that John Wean are simply just a good band. It’s not surprising that the band have started to notice that the majors, who have invested a lot of money in new bands, are feeling a little intimidated by a band who have come out of nowhere and have the ability to turn up and upstage many of these new bands.

The band made an impact at both regional and national level with their first single 'Desperate Dan (She Told Me She Was Single)' receiving critical acclaim and a fair amount of airplay both North and South of the Border, even being added to the Bauer play-list. The single has also had a lot of plays in regional pockets of England such as Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Merseyside, Yorkshire, Nottingham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland as well as in both Ireland and Northern Ireland.

XFM's tastemakers John Kennedy and Clint Boon supported the band at XFM London and Manchester.  At the BBC the band won over producers and DJ's such as Steve Lemaq, Tom Ravenscroft, Liz Kershaw, Chris Hawkins, and Lauren Laverne at 6 music and Radio 2.

Head of music at NME radio, Mark Franklin, was impressed as was head of music at Kerrang, Loz Quest, who supported the single and said, "I really liked the track but would like to see a bigger buzz at national radio and press. I'm interested to see what’s next".

“Producers and stations who didn't play the record remember John Wean because of the hilarious cartoon for 'Desperate Dan'" - Shaun Cooney, Fleming Associates, radio and TV plugger.

The band’s next single 'New York Doesn't Love You' is a brilliant piece of Indie pop which will sound great on the radio and could not only span 6 music and radio 2 but also breakdown the barrier at radio 1, where very few new guitar bands get played. The single could possibly also compete with the current pop and urban trends at Radio 1.

So far "New York Doesn’t Love You" has won over most people who have heard the monitor mix, including Tom Lord-Alge - on hearing the track he wanted to mix the single.

Shaun Cooney, the band’s radio plugger, “If we can increase the national picture in press and radio then we already have fans within 6 music and radio 2 who like the band.
